Doug shared a story (he uses in teaching Physics) about a kid in college who put off doing his Physics homework and the cause and effect of how that decision led to a series of challenges that the kid faced for weeks to come.
This story set context as we explored Proverbs 14: 23 "All hard works brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty".
The guys were asked, "What is Work?", "What is Profit?", What is Talk?", What is Poverty?".
There are many types of work - manual labor, office work, school work, relational work with a wife, sister, friend, spiritual work and effort, etc. Just as there are many kinds of profits beyond just money, like, great relationships with friends, family and the Lord. Your report card is a report of your "profit" in school. You invest in the work of studying and you gain in the profit of good grades.
Conversely, there are many kinds of "mere talk" that lead to many kinds of "poverty". One example is a person who wants to get in shape, but they never exercise or do anything about it.
We then looked at James 1: 22 "Do not merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says!" Again, this speaks to the idea that you must take action in your life. It's not merely hearing or talking it takes doing!
We concluded with Proverbs 15: 19 "The way of the sluggard is blocked with thorns, but the path of the upright is a highway". By not taking action (being lazy) we are making life harder for ourselves. By not building relationships, by not investing the needed time in our class work, by not studying God's word, we create a road that is less profitable and more difficult for ourselves.
